Tribute to Dad in V-Twin - September 2004
Over at Coyote Customs in Oklahoma City, owner Jason Conley got an interesting call one day. It was from Ray Mitchell, who had a very special request. Mitchell’s father had been killed while riding a Kawasaki Vulcan, and Ray wanted a tribute bike dedicated to his dad. “He wanted a long fork and a 200-series rear tire,” Conley told me. “He wanted it to be the most radical metric cruiser going. He wanted to change every piece he could.   Read More...
Pay Back in V-Twin - August 2004
Payback Time
Jay Kirkland used to build custom stereo systems for four-wheelers. He put most of a summer into building a system for a ’74 Chevy pickup belonging to his nephew, Jason Conley, when the latter was in high school.

Black Betty in V-Twin - May 2003
We Americans are an optimistic people. We started with nothing, and out of it made the greatest nation on earth. We lose millions of our citizens in a nasty Civil War, and eventually put it behind us and are better for it. We suffer setbacks and come out on top.
Jason Conley is that kind of guy. Back in 1998, a devastating tornado hit Oklahoma City and flattened the apartment complex next to his. Luckily, Conley was away at the time, but he immediately returned to look for his girlfriend (now his wife). When he was sure she was safe, he visited the complex to find major devastation. His Kawasaki Vulcan 800, which he’d carefully parked under a stairway, had been blown into the parking lot a mangled mess.

Everybody wants a sky’s-the-limit custom bike. However, when you happen to own the local bike shop, well, you’ve also got other considerations. That was the problem facing Dan Maxey, the owner of Maxey’s Cycles (handling Honda, Yamaha, Ducati, Victory and other Polaris machines) in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, while he wanted a showboat custom.

Clean and Smooth in V-Twin - March 2003
“The Honda Shadow 1100 is one of my favorite bikes to customize,” said Jason Conley, who owns Coyote Customs is Oklahoma City. That’s why he was happy to see Jeff Dickerson ride his Honda Shadow 1100 Sabre into his shop. “It has a good shape,” Conley said, which means it’s easier to customize, and there aren’t a lot of products available for it.
I cleaned out my ears with an old connecting rod and said, “What? You’re saying it’s a favorite bike to customize because there aren’t a lot of products for it?”

General Lee Chopper in V-Twin - February 2003
If you remember the Dukes of Hazzard TV show in the ‘80s, you should feel right at home with this bike. The Dukes were a couple of good-ol’-boy, hell-rasiers who lived in fictional Hazzard County, Georgia.  The General Lee was their ’69 Dodge Charger, that they used to keep one step ahead of the corrupt Boss Hogg. In case you’ve forgotten, the General Lee was orange with the numerals 01 on the sides, and a Confederate flag on the roof.
