Altered Ego in V-Twin - September 2006

If You Can’t Have Lambo… Candy Tangerine Dream

“I was raised on dirt bikes,” says Martz Galura, “but when I got on a friend’s cruiser, I fell in love with it.” Martz bought a Suzuki Volusia 800 to help satisfy his streetbike jones, but soon decided that the V-twin was too small for the highways in Oklahoma where he lives. He soon doubled his pleasure by buying a big Kawasaki 1600 Vulcan. “I loved the way the tank was designed and how the bike is low and has a longer stance,” he said.

He wanted to do a mild custom job on the Kawi, to stretch it and run a wider tire, so he asked around about a shop. Fellow riders directed him to Coyote Customs in Oklahoma City. There, owner Jason Conley gave him a guiding hand and “changed my mind about some things.” Jason lowered the bike by installing shorter Progressive Suspension shocks, stretched the tank several inches and flattened its sides. Welding in some quarter-round bar he created an inset on each side of the gas tank; custom painter Robin Townsend rendered a skull inside of them.
Martz wanted the bike to be painted Lamborghini Orange, but then the man who owned the paint decided he didn’t want to part with it; Martz went with Candy Tangerine instead. Other cool touches include those Wicked Image skull flame mirrors, Adjure headlight, Thunder Mfg. air cleaner and RC Components Star Fighter wheels. That one-off handlebar by Coyote Customs really sets the bike apart.
Three-inch BUB pipes were Martz’s original choice, but when he got a better look at them, he didn’t like how they left a “breadbox” opening underneath. That’s when they decided to let Jason get creative and craft these unique 2-into-1s with crossover pipes. “Jason came up with this idea for a racy, hot rod look,” Martz said.
A shop foreman in the oil industry, Martz services and manufactures equipment; he uses the bike as a daily driver. “I ride everywhere,” he said, which includes trips to Florida and Kansas. Of one thing he can be sure, a V-twin with a 1552cc engine is certainly going to be big enough for any highway.
