El Matador in V-Twin - August 2006

In V-Twin, we feature a lot of bikes that are built by shops for customers. While they’re often quite impressive, the most impressive bikes tend to be the ones the shop owners build for themselves. This radical red ride is not only the personal bike of Jason Conley, owner of Coyote Customs (www.coyotecustoms.com) on Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, but it was also used to prototype a number of his new products.

The bike started life as a Yamaha Road star that Jason purchased on eBay after its frame got tweaked in an accident. Jason wanted to develop a line of products for the Road Star, and used this bike to prototype a frame, swingarm and tank. “I wanted to show that you can make a full-blown custom that you can still get on and ride every day.
“I’m into the long, low pro-street look,” Jason said, so he hand built the frame with a 45-degree rake and a seven-inch stretch in the backbone; the bike is 9 ½ feet long. He achieved the 21-inch seat height by putting a low-profile cover over the transfer case. A Hi-Lo Rider rear air suspension system also helps it go low. That new swingarm is able to handle the fat 250-series rear Avon, which hugs a well-polished Weld Racing disc rear wheel.
Because he wanted a runner, Jason ported the engine, installed WebCam pistons and cams and raised the displacement to 1,700cc. he added his own Deuces pipes encased in header wrap for that little touch of nasty. Despite the long rake, Jason says that the controls are set back within easy reach, and the trail numbers are near factory spec. “It still handles great,” he says.
To prove its roadworthiness, Jason often rides it over to Fayetteville. Or sometimes he’ll shut down the shop on a Friday afternoon and ride it over to Okarche with a group of customers for fried chicken.
Having the neatest bike and taking the afternoon off… isn’t it great being a shop owner!                                       --Bill Stermer
